My tour of journalism organizations worth visiting brings me this week to the newly revamped Journalism.org, a joint site of the Project for Excellence in Journalism (PEJ) and the Committee of Concerned Journalists (CCJ). The groups are affiliated with my employer, the Columbia Graduate School of Journalism, but since I have nothing do with them, I feel no hesitation in telling you how good a site Journalism.org is. The other reason I feel confident about saying nice things about the site: my Poynter editor, Julie Moos, is a fan and that’s a great endorsement.

PEJ and CCJ have combined their do-gooder journalism forces to produce a useful site that works well on many levels. Here are just some of them:

Journalism Tools: These are broken up into tools for citizens (what to expect from the press; how to talk to the media; how to write a letter to the editor), writing, reporting and editing tools for journalists in different media (print, broadcast, online), tools for managers (handling the job, making stories fairer and less biased), tools for students (career advice, job links) and tools for teachers (all of the above and more).

Case Studies: These are a series of journalism case studies that are ready for use to teach topics such as Watergate, the Richard Jewell case,  the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal, among others.

Research & reports: These are analytical pieces done by PEJ and CCJ one how the press covers current stories.

Even after I had spent a couple of hours on this site over a couple of days, I really hadn’t seen everything. This is not the kind of site you should access for the first time when you are in a rush. So make time to explore and bookmark sections you will want to revisit later.

Know a site I should highlight? Let me know: poynter@sree.net.[REQUEST: I regularly run tips from readers about sites they find particularly useful in their work. Got one for me? Please e-mail a SHORT tip, including your name, affiliation, city, and phone number to poynter@sree.net.]
