Arts reporters need as many news-gathering resources as crime, courts, or city hall reporters, says Web Tips reader Caroline Abels, an arts writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

“Issues we have to deal with are non-profit accounting, foundation giving, and board ethics,” says Abels, who sent in this week’s tip.

Here are a few good sites that Abels uses and recommends:

  • ArtsJournal (www.artsjournal.com): a roundup of the day’s best arts news from around the world

  • Guidestar (www.guidestar.org): instant financial information on non-profits (Read related tip on GuideStar)

  • The Foundation Center (www.foundationcenter.org): information about foundations and trends in charitable giving

  • National Center for Charitable Statistics (www.nccs.urban.org): more non-profit databases and tips on reading financial reports

  • Americans for the Arts (www.artsusa.org): research reports and news about government arts support

  • National Assembly of State Arts Agencies (www.nasaa-arts.org): information on the arts activities of state governments

  • Board Source (www.boardsource.org): information on the responsibilities of non-profit boards of directors

  • National Arts Journalism Program (www.najp.org): information on arts journalism conferences and reports on arts journalism
