The Herald-Sun has been owned by the Rollins family since 1895. “There are very few family-owned newspapers left in North Carolina — Fayetteville comes to mind and Durham comes to mind,” says Richard Cole, dean of UNC’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication. “It is always sad in a way for a local newspaper to be bought by an outside corporation.” Paxton is based in Kentucky.
