The Associated Press will set up a new strategic business division aimed at connecting the wire service and its members to the growing array of Web-connected devices, including Apple’s iPad. In a speech prepared for delivery at the Colorado Press Association Convention this afternoon, AP CEO Tom Curley announced the creation of AP Gateway and indicated it would build upon other initiatives, such as its News Registry and AP Mobile.

“The first product from Gateway will be a news application for the Apple iPad that incorporates a paid subscription model and offers AP members the opportunity to participate,” Curley said. (The full text [PDF] of his speech is at paidContent.)

AP expects the iPad app to be available by the end of March. No price was announced. || Related: In an interview about the AP Stylebook, editors tell Poynter’s Mallary Tenore that the news org has sold 1,750 of its AP Stylebook apps for the iPhone, priced at $28.99. (Compare that to 50,000 print editions and 24,000 online subscribers in 2009.)
