Subject: [Faculty] Thanks to Alumni, Students

Dear Alumni and Students,

This is to thank you for the remarkable responses you submitted to us in recent weeks regarding the proposed new professional degree fee at the Graduate School of Journalism. Your words were insightful, supportive, and deeply inspiring, in all cases reflecting an abiding faith in our school and our work. In coming weeks I intend to share with you all the comments in redacted form to protect the identities of respondents.

I’m writing now to let you know that after considerable reflection and discussion, the faculty and I have voted to table the motion for at least a year pending further study. Meantime, we are committed to seeking alternative means to fund our work in the face of further anticipated state budget cuts, while also keeping true to Berkeley’s commitment to equal access to an affordable and first-class public education.

I will keep you apprised as we continue. Students should please note that the school meeting scheduled for Thursday, September 16, to discuss the proposed fee, is hereby canceled.

Thanks so much again for your comments, and your enduring belief in our program and the future of journalism.

all best, Neil
