Trailing competitors such as Amazon, Barnes & Noble and Apple, Borders has launched an electronic bookstore available to consumers on the Web, iPhone, iPad, Blackberry and Android devices.

Phil Wahba reports Borders, the second most popular U.S. bookstore chain by overall sales, will offer e-books in 10 different formats for various online and e-reader devices by the end of 2010:

“Borders said its e-bookstore will offer 1.5 million titles, including free books. Amazon says it offers 620,000 books as well as 1.8 million free, out-of-copyright titles, and Barnes & Noble says it offers 1 million titles.

Frederic Lardinois wrote in June that the Borders e-book store will be powered by Kobo and that the company is selling both the Kobo and Aluratek e-readers:

“Borders is one of the major investors in Kobo, which is a spin-off of Canadian publishing company Indigo Books & Music. It’s not clear if Borders’ e-book apps for the iPhone and other platforms will also be re-branded versions of Kobo’s apps. Kobo launched its iPad app [in May.]”
