The Big Picture blog at Boston.com recently launched as an iPad app, the latest in The Boston Globe’s experiments with mobile content. The $2.99 app is the company’s first paid app on the iPad, joining a local real estate app and the Boston.com news app, both of which are free on the iPhone.

Jim Rosenberg writes that the blog won two Webby Awards in 2009 and has been nominated for Editor & Publisher Eppy awards and South by Southwest Web awards:

” ‘Far and away, The Big Picture is our most popular blog, with a worldwide following,’ Robert Kempf, vice president of digital for Boston.com, said in a statement. ‘It’s able to tell a story that is moving and meaningful, through a medium that needs no translation.’ “

An iPhone version of the app has been available since earlier this year. It will be interesting to watch the audience reaction to the iPad app, though, as the Big Picture blog is available as free content on the Web and is already easily accessible using the tablet’s built-in browser and 9.7-inch screen.
