The director of a joint digital magazine publishing venture said Thursday he is excited about the release of Apple’s iPad, but digital tablet formats needed to be standardized, especially to facilitate advertising sales and placement. John Squires, director of Next Issue Media, delivered the message at “The E-Reading Revolution” conference sponsored by the Magazine Publishers of America. Next Issue Media was by created by Time Inc., Hearst, Conde Nast, Meredith and News Corp., specifically to build a shared storefront for digital magazines, advance open standards around digital advertising and content, and develop a publishing platform that could be used across multiple mobile devices. Squires highlighted several positive developments posed by the iPad and other next-generation tablets, including better photography and video, timely updates of content, and bundled subscription offers across print and digital delivery platforms.
