“We already had another writer trying to get [Gen. Stanley] McCrystal, and couldn’t assign both stories,” says GQ editor Jim Nelson. A magazine spokeswoman adds: “He had the idea of doing the piece, so we turned it down without having an interview with McChrystal.” Michael Hastings then took his proposal to Rolling Stone.
