A Japanese journalist being held in Afghanistan managed to send two messages to his Twitter account after showing one of his captors how to use a new cell phone. Kosuke Tsuneoka’s tweets on Friday were the first messages from him since he had been taken captive five months ago. The freelance journalist was released on Saturday; the timing was apparently unrelated to his tweets.
Martyn Williams writes that Tsuneoka gained access to a Nokia N70 after helping one of his guards set up the device for Internet access.
” ‘i am still allive [sic], but in jail,” read a message sent at 1:15 p.m. GMT on Friday. It was followed a few minutes later with a second message, also in English, that read, ‘here is archi in kunduz. in the jail of commander lativ.’ The message referred to the Dasht-e-Archi district of Kunduz where he was being held.”
