With support from the Ford Foundation, Poynter has spent the last 18 months listening to and learning from the people behind the world of new media. We’ve worked with bloggers, community organizers, editors who run hyper-local sites, those who aggregate news, and those who manage social networks. We’ve been calling this the Sense-Making Project.

Our goal in the pilot phase of this project was to develop enough knowledge and understanding to accurately describe what we see and define how journalism is evolving.

Now we want to have a larger conversation. This blog will be the start of that effort. Four writers and two editors will survey real-time developments in the daily journalism created by both the Fourth and the Fifth Estates. In doing so, we hope to map this new landscape, highlight what’s working and point out weak spots in our changing information structures.

Most importantly, we plan to explore the values that are gaining traction, as well as those values that might be receding.

Our writers are Adam Hochberg, Bill Krueger, Steve Myers, and Latoya Peterson. Julie Moos and I are the editors. You can subscribe to this blog by e-mail, RSS feed or just keep checking back daily for new stories. Let us know what you think, share your story ideas and questions about making sense of media.
