Even before the CueCat, publishers were trying, mostly in vain, to drive readers to online content via refers, hyperlinks and bar codes placed in printed materials. Google got into the game in December, distributing to thousands of businesses stickers with a QR code that would link a mobile phone browser to information about the business. Microsoft has now joined the fray with its “Tag” code, which was unveiled at last year’s Consumer Electronics Show. Microsoft Tag uses a proprietary standard, but the company is currently allowing free use of the technology.
