Newsday, which came out with its new iPad app last month, launched a clever advertisement to promote the app last Thursday. The ad is the first mobile news app advertisement to go viral.

The app itself is a free download, and so is the content, for a limited time. Eventually you will need to be a Newsday subscriber to get full access.

It is tough to know whether mobile news can be sold with clever advertising, but Newsday is going to give that theory a run with this commercial. As Nick Bilton wrote on Friday, “it was unclear how many iPads were harmed during the making of this video.”
