Adam Kushner Joins National Journal Group as Deputy Magazine Editor

Washington, D.C. (September 30, 2010) — National Journal Group announced today that Adam Kushner is joining the organization as Deputy Magazine Editor. Kushner is currently a Senior Editor at Newsweek.

“Adam will inject rigor and discipline to our analyses, ensuring that our reporters seize the heart of every story and not its capillaries,” said National Journal Group Editor-in-Chief Ron Fournier. “Under his guidance, National Journal readers won’t be left asking, ‘So what? Why does this matter?’ They’ll know what happened in Washington and why it’s relevant to their lives and work.”

At Newsweek, Kushner edited foreign coverage, including major projects such as a Berlin Wall retrospective and coverage of the 2010 World Cup. Prior to taking the editing position, Kushner covered ideas and trends for the foreign desk as a senior writer, reporting on the drug war in Colombia, government surveillance in China, resource nationalism in Russia, the economics of prisoner exchanges, and the role of business schools in creating the credit crisis.

From 2003 to 2007, Kushner held a variety of positions at The New Republic, including a post as Assistant Managing Editor and, ultimately, Managing Editor/Online. In that role, he managed all aspects of the site and oversaw a relaunch of TNR.com.

“In a world where readers are bombarded with information, Adam understands what it takes to create a magazine that advances the national debate and doesn’t just recapitulate it,” said Ron Brownstein, Editorial Director for National Journal Group. “He’ll inject fresh energy and inspiration into our team, and help ensure that National Journal magazine produces fresh, forward-looking analysis that provides our readers the indispensable insight they need to have every week.”

Kushner is a graduate of Columbia University, and co-founded both the Columbia Political Review and the Columbia Journal of Literary Criticism during his time there. He is a native of New Orleans.

Kushner is the latest in a growing list of talented writers, reporters, and analysts joining National Journal Group. In the last several weeks, National Journal Group has announced several important new additions, including the Boston Globe’s David Beard, Reuters’ Patsy Wilson, USA Today’s Kathy Kiely, veteran journalist Terence Samuel, the Miami Herald’s Beth Reinhard, former Fox News correspondent Major Garrett, Newsweek’s Michael Hirsh, veteran magazine writer and editor Matt Cooper, political analyst Matthew Dowd, The Atlantic’s Marc Ambinder, USA Today’s Aamer Madhani, the Wall Street Journal’s Yochi Dreazen, Sue Davis, and Fawn Johnson, Politico’s Josh Kraushaar, Coral Davenport, and Tim Alberta, the Tribune Washington Bureau’s Jim Tankersley, Campaigns and Elections’ Jeremy Jacobs, Modern Healthcare’s Matt DoBias, and more. National Journal Group, which includes premium publications such as National Journal, CongressDaily, Hotline, The Almanac of American Politics, and Global Security Newswire, is undergoing a transformation that will build upon its reputation for intelligence and depth, infusing it with
