Fortune Managing Editor Andy Serwer on Monday called Steve Jobs a “once-in-a-century” innovator comparable to Thomas Edison, but he expressed disappointment that Apple is still reluctant to allow magazine subscriptions on the iPad.
Serwer spoke at a Society of American Business Editors and Writers event in Toronto. According to Dana Lacey, he said Jobs has managed to make the music industry profitable — at least for Apple:
“Now, Fortune and other magazines are fighting with Apple to allow subscriptions through iPads: right now, you have to pay for each issue individually. ‘What magazine or newspaper subscriber has to pay for each issue?’ [Serwer asked.] Fortune wants the autonomy to charge for subscriptions, but Apple is reluctant to hand over purchasing power.”
