A San Francisco State University student photographer who witnessed a murder on a San Francisco street and was ruled covered by California’s reporter shield law has won the Gold/Documentary award in the College Photographer of the Year contest. He wasn’t identified in news reports and court documents last year because of safety concerns, but Alex Welsh used his name when he entered the contest.
