Knight Foundation
Using a portion of a new $1.2 million grant, the Sunlight Foundation plans to develop a series of “National Data Apps” to provide consumers with mobile access to federal government data.
The grant, from the Knight Foundation, will be disbursed over two years and also will be used to enhance the Sunlight Live website, which provides “a real-time accountability platform that combines streaming video, government transparency data, journalistic background and social media coverage of major events in Washington.”
According to a Knight news release, the mobile apps envisioned by Sunlight will cover topics such as the environment, public health and consumer spending:
” ‘The Sunlight Foundation seeks to promote greater access to data from federal agencies for use at the national, state and local levels,’ said Ellen Miller, cofounder and executive director of the Sunlight Foundation. ‘These new apps will give the public unprecedented access to critical information that will bring us a step closer to closing the transparency gap in Washington.’ “
