UPDATE BELOW
Now that we’ve seen the first iPad reviews, for media types the next question becomes: How are my favorite news sources going to look on Apple’s “magical” device?

Apple itself has begun to answer this question. The company has started a directory of major Web sites that use HTML5, CSS and Javascript (and not Flash) to “deliver content that looks and functions beautifully on iPad.”

Among the early adoptees: The New York Times, CNN, Reuters, Time and Sports Illustrated. (Remember that if you follow these links on a non-iPad browser, they won’t look any different.) Not listed by Apple but also among the newly iPad-friendly sites are National Public Radio and CBS TV.

Video host Brightcove announced earlier this week that its videos will play on the iPad via a new HTML5-based player. Several major publications, including The New York Times and Time magazine, use Brightcove for their video content. (SPIN announced Thursday that it also will use Brightcove’s player to reach users of Apple’s devices.)

Several resourceful blogs, including Appadvice and Appshopper.com, have gained early access to the Web version of Apple’s iTunes store and have compiled lists of upcoming iPad apps.

Josh Benton at Nieman Journalism Lab did a great roundup of the news apps Thursday morning. Benton writes that The New York Times looks to be readying a free “Editors choice” app with limited content.

UPDATE: Some iPad apps now show up in the App Store (links will open in iTunes):
