We’re delighted to announce that Karl Vick is our new Jerusalem bureau chief. A gifted writer and reporter, Karl joins us from The Washington Post, where from 1998 to 2007 he covered most every major global conflict — and many minor ones, too. He was based first in Nairobi, then Istanbul, with extended stays in Kosovo, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Yemen, Iran and Iraq, where he ran the Baghdad bureau right next door to TIME’s own during a period of some of the most violent insurgent activity. In 2001, he and team of other journalists from the Post were named finalists for the Pulitzer Prize in Public Service, for a series of pieces that changed global perceptions about how the fight against AIDS was being waged in Africa. Most recently, he’s lived in California, first at Stanford on a Knight fellowship, then as chief of the Post’s Los Angeles bureau.
Karl is a Minnesota native who began his career in journalism at the Minneapolis Star. His enormous experience throughout the world as a foreign correspondent means that he’ll be regularly getting on a plane for hotspots as well as covering the Jerusalem beat. He joins our already formidable team of international correspondents and will be an important contributor to TIME’s award-winning international coverage.
Until he heads overseas, he’s sitting a couple of doors down from Ratu; stop by to see him and and join us in welcoming Karl to Time.
