The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday announced a new mobile app for Android tablets that continues the paper’s support for a digital “read anywhere” subscription model.
The company wrote in a press release announcing the new app:
The “pay once, read anywhere” subscription model is clearly in demand by consumers, but it is difficult for publishers to offer due to technical and logistical challenges. For instance, publications using Apple’s iTunes Store to process subscription payments do not have access to customer information, so they are unable to connect individual subscribers to paid content on other digital platforms.
The Wall Street Journal and others have circumvented this problem by processing subscription records and payments on their own, which enables them to grant the user access to content across multiple digital and print platforms.
