Dow Jones & Co.
The Wall Street Journal on Wednesday announced a new mobile app for Android tablets that continues the paper’s support for a digital “read anywhere” subscription model.

The company wrote in a press release announcing the new app:

“The WSJ Tablet Edition app for Android is free to download from the Android Market with a subscription required for full access to all content and features. A full digital subscription is available for $3.99 per week, which provides access to WSJ Tablet Edition for Android and iPad, WSJ.com, and WSJ Mobile Reader for BlackBerry and iPhone. Current Journal subscribers receive full access to the WSJ Tablet Edition for free for a limited time.”

The “pay once, read anywhere” subscription model is clearly in demand by consumers, but it is difficult for publishers to offer due to technical and logistical challenges. For instance, publications using Apple’s iTunes Store to process subscription payments do not have access to customer information, so they are unable to connect individual subscribers to paid content on other digital platforms.

The Wall Street Journal and others have circumvented this problem by processing subscription records and payments on their own, which enables them to grant the user access to content across multiple digital and print platforms.
