The bureau — which opens next month — is Al Jazeera English’s fifth in the U.S. It will be staffed by John Hendren, formerly with ABC News in Washington, D.C., who starts today. The network says it’s ramping up its U.S. coverage for the 2012 elections.

Al Jazeera English Announces New Chicago Correspondent
International channel adds to U.S. Bureaus and programming
CHICAGO, IL – Al Jazeera English is proud to announce today the opening of a new Chicago bureau and the addition of AJE correspondent, John Hendren. AJE programming became available for the first time across Chicago in October on WTTW, the most-watched public television station in America.
This bureau adds to Al Jazeera English’s American bureaus in Washington, DC, New York, Miami and Los Angeles. John joins the more than 150 Al Jazeera English staff based in the U.S., and will be part of Al Jazeera’s expanded coverage from the U.S. heading into the election year.
John Hendren starts with Al Jazeera on December 5th as correspondent for the channel’s new bureau in Chicago. John has been at ABC as its White House correspondent since 2006, and previously worked with NPR and the LA Times. Hendren has received awards for investigative and breaking news reporting, including the Alfred I DuPont-Columbia University Award for coverage of the war in Iraq in 2007, and the Overseas Press Club’s 2002 Award for the Los Angeles Times’series on the conflict in Afghanistan, “The Untold War”.
“Chicago is often the bridge between the homeland states and Eastern seaboard and its addition in AJE programming will give our global English viewers a far deeper picture of movements and sentiments in the U.S.,” said John Hendren. “I’m proud to continue my in-depth investigative reporting at a news channel that has set the bar for going where few other networks have.”
Al Jazeera English also announced two other additions to its team in the Americas: Alan Fisher in Washington, DC and Andy Gallacher in Miami.

Our coverage of U.S. issues, both domestic and international including Occupy Wall Street, the immigration debate, and America’s military and economic interactions with the world has always been important to us, and we will only deepen the extent of our coverage with the help of our new bureaus.”
As part of its commitment to enhancing coverage of the U.S. ahead of the elections, Al Jazeera English’s Americas bureau begin airing the discussion show Inside Story out of Washington D.C. Starting on December, 12, the show will air every weekday at 6:30am and 7:30pm EST. The show gives a platform for guests of different perspectives to analyze and dissect the day’s top news stories. Several episodes a week will be dedicated to covering the 2012 elections, while other episodes will follow significant stories from throughout North and South America.
