Romenesko Misc.
The American Society of News Editors sent me this statement after I asked about a Romenesko reader’s tip about the organization laying off half its staff:

ASNE recently completed a strategic assessment that calls for expanded membership, regional training and an ongoing commitment to the First Amendment and newsroom diversity. All of that requires resources, so we’re keeping an eye on our bottom line while trying to build for the future.

To that end, we’re eliminating four full-time positions and will instead contract for financial, technical and administrative support. We’re also seeking collaborations and partnerships with other organizations, including possibly partnering with a journalism school for office space and operational synergies.

We remain committed to all of our core programs and priorities, including our annual convention and newsroom diversity census, leadership training, programs and webinars on emerging media and other journalism issues, annual awards for journalism excellence, pursuit of open government policies and defense of the First Amendment, and support for America’s high school journalists and their advisors.

Support high-integrity, independent journalism that serves democracy. Make a gift to Poynter today. The Poynter Institute is a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization, and your gift helps us make good journalism better.

From 1999 to 2011, Jim Romenesko maintained the Romenesko page for the Poynter Institute, a Florida-based non-profit school for journalists. Poynter hired him in August…
