The Suffolk County Police Department plans to drop charges against a freelance news photographer arrested Friday for videotaping police. The Long Island Press reported that the police commissioner made the decision about an hour after the Press Club of Long Island protested the arrest. The police commissioner told the newspaper that officers will undergo media relations training. The photographer, Phil Datz, was videotaping the conclusion of a police chase when an officer told him to "go away," although other members of the public were allowed to remain. When he resumed filming farther away, he was arrested and charged with obstruction. || Related: What to do when police tell you to stop taking photos, video (Poynter.org)
