Lee County (Fla.) officials last October approved financial incentives for Gannett for creating 35 jobs. On Tuesday, Gannett’s Fort Myers News-Press — located in Lee County — laid off 14 employees. Does the county now regret giving the money to the newspaper chain? a Fort Myers TV reporter asked Lee County’s Economic Development chief. “No, we don’t regret it at all. It’s a different division of Gannett.”
NBC2: If Gannett continues to lay off people, does it get to a certain point when you say, we need some of our money back; we gave you money to create jobs not lose them?
[County official]: The contract was for a different division of Gannett, not the newspaper, not the Fort Myers News-Press. That would not be the case. Gannett is in compliance with the contract.
