Deseret News apologizes for ‘uncivil and sophomoric’ college paper insert
Salt Lake Tribune | Deseret News | Daily Utah Chronicle
Student journalists at the University of Utah's Daily Utah Chronicle traditionally put out a Rivalry Guide just before the Utah-BYU football game. For the past four years, the issue has been inserted in the Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News. In a letter to readers published on Friday, the News says this year's Rivalry Guide wasn't approved by editors and was "mistakenly inserted" in the paper.
We sincerely regret the confusion this created.
The content of the Chronicle insert fell far below Deseret News editorial standards. We deeply apologize to our many readers who, like us, found this insert uncivil and sophomoric.
Please know that we have taken steps to ensure this will not happen again.
Student editors at the Daily Utah Chronicle fired back with their own Letter to Readers:
It was shocking when Deseret News issued an apology for content that was planned to be distributed, claiming it was, “mistakenly inserted.”
The allegations that The Chronicle’s content is “uncivil and sophomoric” degrades the value of the reporting that is evident in stories such as the underground secular society in Utah Valley with BYU members, “The Group: Utah County’s covert secular community.”
To those who claim our content was biased: The U is a rival of BYU and the Rivalry Guide’s content reflects the spirit of the Holy War.
