Chris Frates Joins National Journal Team
Politico Reporter Will Cover Lobbying and Influence

WASHINGTON, D.C., June 13, 2011 — National Journal Group announced today that Politico reporter Chris Frates is joining the organization as National Journal’s new Lobbying Correspondent. At Politico, Frates has established himself as one of the top reporters on the influence beat.

“We’re thrilled to have Frates joining our team, especially in such a critical role for our core audience of D.C. decision-makers,” said Ron Fournier, Editor-in-Chief of National Journal Group. “He has a keen eye, a reputation for news-breaking, and an enviable well of sources that will be invaluable for our readers seeking essential intelligence on the levers of power being pulled in Washington every day.”

At Politico, Frates covered the intersection of money, politics, and policy, and was the founder and author of “Politico Influence,” a daily intelligence and analysis email chronicling Washington’s lobbyists and message makers. Previously, he covered health care reform for Politico, regularly breaking news and driving the conversation on that all-consuming debate. Frates also founded and wrote “Politico Pulse,” the organization’s daily health reform email briefing that quickly became a must-read crib sheet in Washington.

At National Journal, Frates will contribute across all of the organization’s platforms, including a custom digital home that will allow him to continue growing and engaging his already sizable audience.

“Chris Frates is a perfect example of a new breed of editorial entrepreneur that represents the future of journalism and the future of National Journal,” said Atlantic Media President Justin Smith. “He understands how to create and package content for multiple platforms and build communities around his reporting, skills we intend to put to good use at NJ.”

Before coming to Washington, Frates covered the Colorado legislature and politics for the Denver Post and was part of a team whose work was recognized as a finalist for the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for breaking news.

Throughout his career, Frates has covered three statehouses and numerous local, state and national campaigns. His work has appeared in the Washington Post, the Boston Globe, the Dallas Morning News, and dozens of other publications. His political analysis has also been featured on the CBS Evening News, CNN, Fox News, MSNBC, WTOP, and many other national and local television and radio programs.

Frates will begin work at National Journal in mid-July.
