Poynter newspaper industry analyst Rick Edmonds says the pink slips handed out by Gannett on Tuesday confirm a clear trend: “Newspapers, though still at least modestly profitable, are much smaller businesses than they were five years ago. Probably for good. And they are much more likely to get smaller still than regain some of their lost bulk in the years immediately ahead as legacy ad budgets get shaved in favor of a wide range of digital marketing.” || Julie Moos: Newsroom layoffs hurt us all.
