How to handle photos of bin Laden after they’re released

Al Tompkins rounds up experts’ advice for newsrooms. Former Washington Post editor R.B. Brenner — now Pulliam Visiting Professor of Journalism at DePauw University — tells him that journalists “normally have a skittishness when we show a dead body. You have to consider the size and placement of a photograph. I tend to believe in my gut and experience when it comes to showing dead bodies I opt for smaller and not color.” He also advises putting the image on an inside page.
