Recently, I wrote about the absence of African American editors in newspaper sports departments, which is in stark contrast with the number of African American athletes.

The column led one reader to e-mail me and ask about the similar lack of female sports editors. In this week’s live chat, I discussed this topic with Colleen McDaniel, sports editor of The Virginian Pilot, and Jenni Carlson, sports columnist at The Oklahoman and chair of the Association for Women in Sports Media. During the chat, they shared ideas about how sports departments can improve their coverage by bringing more women into leadership roles.
