It’s easy to make blanket statements about the liberal or conservative slants of news outlets. It’s harder to see both sides — to consume news from a diversity of sources that reflect views different from our own.

In one of his Reuters columns this week, Jack Shafer wrote that news consumers should be more critical of their favorite news outlets rather than accusing other outlets of being biased.

Shafer argues that media bias can add flavor and variety to stories, and that truth doesn’t always reside in the center. “Media bias isn’t a journalistic problem,” he wrote. “It’s a solution.”
