The Times is telling national subscribers like me that on Jan. 2, rates will increase 30 to 60 cents a week depending on the package. (I got a letter with my Sunday newspaper.) “This is our first home delivery rate increase in two and a half years — and necessary for us to keep up with the costs of providing the nation’s most honored journalism,” the letter says. It goes on to describe the various digital products subscribers get along with the newspaper. Eileen Murphy, the Times’ vice president for corporate communications, tells me that all home delivery rates are going up an average of 4 percent. In 2012, it would cost me $800.80 a year to get the Times every day in St. Petersburg, Fla.

The new rates:

  • Daily: $15.40 (up from $14.80)
  • Sunday: $7.80 (up from $7.50)
  • Monday-Friday: $7.70 (up from $7.40)
  • Saturday and Sunday: $9.30 (up from $8.90)
  • Monday-Saturday: $9.36 (up from $9)
  • Friday-Sunday: $10.80 (up from $10.40)
