MediaWire Memo
Newsday is expanding its digital operations into Westchester County, one of the wealthiest areas in the country. As part of the expansion, the Cablevision-owned property will hire 25 new editors, reporters and digital content specialists. It will also align free tabloid amNewYork more closely with Newsday, but “to be clear, Newsday is not returning to New York City.”

Re: New Local Media Initiatives

Last month, we created a unified Local Media digital operation and integrated Newsday’s sales organization with Cablevision Media Sales. Today, we are very pleased to announce two new initiatives.

First, Newsday is expanding! Building on the success of its online and mobile products, Newsday will launch new digital products — web as well as iPhone, iPad and Android apps – specifically for Westchester County beginning early next year. Comprehensive, compelling hyper-local news, sports, opinion, things-to-do and entertainment coverage will serve the Westchester community.

Newsday is the indispensable source of information for Long Islanders. Now, through this initiative and by harnessing the strengths of News 12, MSG Varsity and amNewYork, Newsday will become the premier digital information choice for Westchester County residents.

Under Debby Krenek’s leadership of Cablevision’s Local Media Digital Group, Diane Goldie will serve as Editor of these new digital products and will hire approximately 25 new editors, reporters and digital content specialists. Qualified applicants may email resumes to mskinner@newsday.com.

Second, we will align our highly successful amNewYork newspaper more closely with Newsday’s editorial operations and Cablevision Media Sales. To be clear, Newsday is not returning to New York City. We are very proud of our free New York newspaper and look forward to identifying ways to enrich the editorial content with the full weight of what Newsday’s vast operation can bring, as well as add news and opinion pages to make it an even stronger newspaper for New York City.

We also have significant aspirations digitally and within the mobile space for amNewYork and believe these will be better realized as part of the larger Local Media Digital Group. In addition, amNewYork’s closer relationship with Cablevision Media Sales continues to expand on our efforts to serve our customers’ advertising needs, regardless of platform – television, digital or print. We will share more information as these efforts unfold over the coming months.
