Sohaib Athar, who tweeted the sounds of the raid on Osama bin Laden’s compound in Abottabad, Pakistan, has been besieged by journalists seeking interviews. Monday night in Pakistan (late morning eastern time in the U.S.), he tweeted, “I don’t own a TV set and stopped watching TV many years ago. Sorry three-lettered-big-tv-news-channels for not replying to your emails.” The first journalists to reach Athar for interviews were Time correspondent Omar Waraich, writer Mosharraf Zaidi, and reporters for Reuters.
As word spread on Twitter about what Athar had witnessed, he tweeted, “Uh oh, now I’m the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it.” Athar had about 750 followers when he tweeted about the raid. It’s about 52,000 now and growing quickly. Athar apologized on Twitter for not being able to get back to everyone who was trying to contact him. He seems to have a good attitude about it all, joking that he would’ve tweeted about the raid “wittingly” if he had known about it.
