ESQUIRE MAGAZINE HIRES LEGENDARY WRITER
CHARLES P. PIERCE

PIERCE LEAVES BOSTON GLOBE TO HEADLINE ESQUIRE.COM’S POLITICS BLOG

One of America’s Great Writers to Become Daily Conversation-Starter

NEW YORK, NY (September 12, 2011) — Award-winning writer Charles P. Pierce will now work at Esquire magazine full-time effective September 26th. In his new position, he will become the lead writer on Esquire.com’s “The Politics Blog,” providing daily commentary on the American political scene, as well as continue to write feature stories for the magazine. Pierce has stepped down from The Boston Globe after nine years as a reporter, sports columnist, and staff writer for the Sunday magazine to join the staff of Esquire, where he has been a contributing editor since 1997.

“Charlie is going to make Esquire.com’s “The Politics Blog” one of the very few political blogs one has to read every day, all day,” said Esquire Editor-in-Chief David Granger. “He is one of the great American voices, and we’re confident that he will lead a national conversation during what should be the most entertaining political season of our lifetimes.”

In addition to his magazine and newspaper work, Pierce is the author of four books, including Idiot America: How Stupidity Became a Virtue in the Land of the Free. He is a frequent panelist on NPR’s Wait, Wait Don’t Tell Me, and his work has appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Atlantic, Slate, and Altercation. He has written about politics for Esquire magazine for years and has been a guest contributor to “The Politics Blog” on Esquire.com since its inception in Spring 2010. In September, he takes over full-time at an expanded version of “The Politics Blog with Charles P. Pierce” (http://www.esquire.com/blogs/politics/). Tom Junod, Mark Warren, John H. Richardson, and Thomas P.M. Barnett — as well as occasional outside contributors — will continue to offer insight into the topics of the day.

“Ever since Norman Mailer followed Superman into the supermarket, Esquire has been at the forefront of explaining this complicated country’s complicated politics to its complicated self,” says Pierce. “Now, as we come into a presidential election, with a battered economy and two-and-a-half ongoing wars, and with one of our two major political parties seemingly succumbing to dementia, Esquire.com will bring that long tradition into a new era. I look forward to helping make that process happen along with the talented stable of writers who also will contribute to the Politics Blog. And there will be fun. And snark.”
