Union official John Hill says the Journal will lay off employees if the buyouts don’t reduce expenses enough. The layoffs would be based on seniority and split evenly between editorial and business. WPRI’s Ted Nesi reports, “The staff reductions will be the first cuts to The Journal’s newsroom since multiple rounds of layoffs in 2008 and 2009. They come as the paper prepares to begin charging next year for its new website, which debuted Oct. 17.”
