Philly.com has published six reader letters about its coverage of allegations Daily News sportswriter Bill Conlin sexually abused at least seven people. Two of the letters are negative, questioning why comments were limited on stories about Conlin; the rest praise editor Larry Platt and the paper for its handling of the situation. Inquirer reporter Nancy Phillips, who reported on the allegations, told WTXF Fox 29:
What these women and this man have said to me is that they think it is important in the wake of Penn State and Syracuse to have this be part of the public discourse, that these things do happen, that they’re so often hushed up.
The Morning Call reports calls to abuse hotlines have risen since news spread of the Penn State and Syracuse scandals. “Some good can actually come from these public scandals,” writes The Birmingham News’ Jon Solomon. “Stories of kids getting molested are reaching new audiences — dads who watch ESPN and athletes who need to know it’s OK to tell their story … We’ve reached American sports’ Catholic Church moment.”
