Today's news had me digging into the Romenesko archives for the 2003 stories about Los Angeles Times readers canceling the paper over stories about Arnold Schwarzenegger‘s behavior with women. John Carroll, who was then Times editor, said that "In the long run, I believe this will strengthen the paper’s relationship with the readers" because they'll respect the paper’s commitment to the truth. Press critic Dan Kennedy wrote that "it should go without saying that the Los Angeles Times did what it was supposed to do." || The New York Observer said at the time that the Wall Street Journal should be ashamed of itself for minimizing groping allegations against Schwarzenegger. “Sounding like a bunch of 1950’s-era martini-guzzlers, the editors of The Journal gave Mr. Schwarzenegger a figurative big slap on the back and rewarded him because he did not ‘deny, dissemble or wag his finger into a camera and drop a whopper.'"
