“CBS’s morning show is at times so soberly focused on hard news that it looks almost like PBS or C-Span,” writes Alessandra Stanley about “The Early Show,” which is a distant third in ratings behind “Today” and “Good Morning America.” The hard-news focus of “The Early Show” is a sharp contrast to its rivals, which “serve the news the way some mothers disguise the spinach.” “The Early Show” started a recent show with a report on unemployment; its rivals told viewers about a wife missing in Aruba and wondered whether Amanda Knox would reunite with her Italian boyfriend.
