The Daily Beast
Newsweek/Daily Beast Editor-in-Chief Tina Brown has responded to criticism of the magazine’s cover image of Michele Bachmann in which she looks wide-eyed into the camera above a headline that reads, “The Queen of Rage.” Brown said, “Michele Bachmann’s intensity is galvanizing voters in Iowa right now and Newsweek’s cover captures that.” The Daily Beast has posted outtakes from the event, saying, “Many of the photographs taken for the feature showed Bachmann with similar intensity.” The image chosen for the cover is the most unflattering, which some see as evidence of liberal bias and sexism. Other images include typical campaign shots, a pious-looking portrait and a frame in which she has swept-back hair. “To us, the biggest news from the controversial Newsweek cover of Michele Bachmann is how she has stayed clear of the controversy and moved on,” writes the crew at NBC’s “First Read.” Earlier: Tina Brown’s Newsweek covers have featured women 6 of 14 weeks.
