BuzzFeed readers ‘consume serious news elsewhere’
Anthony De Rosa talks with BuzzFeed co-founder and CEO Jonah Peretti and new editor-in-chief Ben Smith about what they'll do with the $15.5 million in funding announced this week. || Watch the video after the jump. Highlights:
Peretti: "We don't feel that we need to cover everything. I think the era of one news organization thinking they have to cover everything in the world is over. ... We know that our readers are going to be reading lots of other sites as well."
Peretti: "We have a very, a very smart audience. And although they came to BuzzFeed for light-hearted stuff, they are people who consume serious news elsewhere. So a lot of them I think will be excited and refreshed that now they can get their news in the kind of format they've loved, that BuzzFeed's provided for them."
Smith: "We're fluent in Web culture and writing for an audience that we assume knows everything except for the next story. We're not restating things constantly; readers are telling me they really like that. These are little things but these are very stale forms of journalism."
