CNN corrects: Hatebreed is not a white-power band
The Hollywood Reporter | Huffington Post
Lonnie Nasatir included the Connecticut group Hatebreed in a list of white-power groups for an opinion article on CNN.com called "Hate with a beat: White power music." But Hatebreed, despite its attention-grabbing name, is not a white-power group. The group took its not-baseless beef to twitter:
— Hatebreed (@hatebreed) August 8, 2012
The piece now runs with an editor's note at the bottom:
A previous version of this commentary incorrectly included the band Hatebreed in a list of white power bands. Hatebreed is a self-described "hardcore metal" band. CNN regrets the error.
The Hollywood Reporter says "it only took about 30 minutes" for the correction to get appended on the story.
I'm trying to get in touch with Nasatir, who CNN identifies as director of the Anti-Defamation League's Upper Midwest chapter, to find out how he reported the piece, since it begins by describing a typical "white power music concert." One resource that's helpful -- besides checking out the people you write about, of course -- is the Southern Poverty Law Center's list of "Active Racist Music Groups," which lists some white-power record labels. Label56, which distributed records by accused Sikh temple shooter Wade Michael Page, isn't listed on it, but the SPLC has covered the label previously.
