Covering John Edwards’ trial was ‘some weird summer camp’ for photographers:
…for a writer, the trial was great. We had hours of rich testimony to listen to and sort through. Plenty for the stories we had to file each day.
But for photographers like my colleague Travis Dove? His days were spent focused on four events: the short walks Mr. Edwards and his family and lawyers took between their car and the courtroom each day for testimony and lunch. Star witnesses broke it up a little, but for the photographers, the game was all about waiting.
“It takes about 15 seconds to walk from the curb where Edwards and the witnesses arrived to the front door of the courthouse,” Travis says. “On the busy days, there were less than five minutes of active shooting.”
The photographers became participants in some weird summer camp.
