How Arizona newspapers handled Giffords shooting then and now

The January 8, 2011, shooting of Gabrielle Giffords at a constituent event in Tucson, Ariz., captured the nation’s attention and appeared on the country’s front pages the following day. Two Arizona papers covered the shooting and its aftereffects throughout the year. Both The Arizona Republic (left) and the Arizona Daily Star (right) featured the story on its Monday front pages, as well as its Sunday front pages honoring the one-year anniversary of the tragedy. Two other Arizona papers treated the shooting prominently in both 2011 and 2012, while two papers that covered the shooting in 2011 made no mention of the anniversary or Giffords’ recovery on its 2012 anniversary front page.

Though The Daily Courier devoted much of its front page to the shooting in 2011 (left), it contained no coverage of the one-year anniversary (right). It did, however, feature stories both days about U.S. Rep. Paul Gosar, who now represents the paper’s home district.
