With the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq winding down, more veterans will be relying on the U.S. government for services. To adequately report on how the government is responding to their needs, journalists need to learn the issues facing veterans and figure out how to navigate the complex bureaucracy of the Department of Veterans Affairs.
On Wednesday at 2 p.m. ET, Chris Adams, investigative reporter for McClatchy’s Washington bureau, and Joe Bergantino of the New England Center for Investigative Reporting will discuss how reporters can go deep on veterans’ affairs.
They’ll discuss which issues reporters should focus on, what they need to know about the VA, and how to develop sources.
This chat is being conducted in conjunction with a Specialized Reporting Institute, “Iraq/Afghanistan War Veterans: Battle on the Homefront,” a free seminar funded by the McCormick Foundation and taught by faculty from IRE, Poynter and The New York Times. The application deadline is Feb. 20.
