Employees, retirees and their families have been invited to watch the presses roll for the last time at The Huntsville Times just after midnight on Sunday, according to a memo from the pressroom manager. After that, the newspaper will be printed at The Birmingham News, which also is owned by Advance Publications. Both papers, along with the Press-Register in Mobile and The Times-Picayune in New Orleans, will be printed three times a week starting in October; the four papers laid off about 600 journalists in the two states in June. “Remember that this is a work area and safety is a priority,” wrote pressroom manager Stephen Jolly. “Also you could get dirty so don’t wear your Sunday best.” ||Â Related: Times-Picayune rescinds layoff notices to some employees after those offered jobs decide to leave (Gambit) | Times-Picayune retains most of its legal advertising, but alternative weekly gets some (NOLA.com/Poynter) | Readers around the country pan Advance’s websites (WadeKwon.com) || Earlier: What’s the future of news in Alabama after layoffs, consolidation?
