A replacement has been named for Thomas Redburn, just one day after the International Herald Tribune announced that its managing editor would be returning to The New York Times, which owns the paper. Dave Smith will be the new IHT managing editor, according to a note from Redburn and Executive Editor Alison Smale. (Memo follows.)

When the call goes out for an editor with stellar news judgement, an unflappable ability to move fast on breaking news and broad knowledge of events around the world, there are few, if any, who could answer better than Dave Smith, a senior editor at The Times and a 29-year veteran of the paper.
Dave was the savvy editor who led the team that won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news for its coverage of the first bombing of the World Trade Center in 1993. After that, he served as editor of The City (precursor to what today is known as Metropolitan), a Sunday section that roamed all over New York City. From 1998, Dave was a pioneering media editor, overseeing coverage of television, publishing, advertising and the nascent news industry then beginning to blossom on the Web. In 2004, he moved to Week in Review, where he was deputy and then editor until last summer. With all those accolades and smarts under his belt, Dave seemed the perfect fit to take over as the new Managing Editor at the International Herald Tribune. He and Tom Redburn, already announced as International Economics Editor, will swap cities sometime in early spring.
Also headed to Paris is Kirk Kraeutler, who has been a mainstay of the foreign desk in several different roles since joining The Times in 1995 from Foreign Affairs. Most notably, Kirk’s was the guiding hand that propelled a team of Times correspondents to the Pulitzer Prize for international reporting in 2009 for their superb and brave work from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Currently assistant foreign editor with responsibility for that region, Kirk was enterprise editor from 2002, and before that worked on the copy desk and in the backfield. It was there that he first teamed up with Alison Smale; together they headed up the weekend foreign report. He will now be working together with Alison again, as deputy managing editor, news at the IHT. Kirk is looking forward to turning from war to the social and financial troubles of Europe and beyond. He, too, will be moving in time to enjoy the legendary spring in Paris.
