Journalism professor defends Iowa insults on ‘Rock Center’
Des Moines Register | The Gazette | NBC
University of Iowa professor Stephen Bloom talks with Willie Geist about his essay in the Atlantic that calls Iowans "elderly waiting to die, those too timid (or lacking in educated) to peer around the bend for better opportunities, an assortment of waste-toids and meth addicts with pale skin and rotted teeth."
Bloom unapologetically tells Geist, "I'm sorry, this is the way I do it. This is called satire. This is called parody." Geist asks Bloom about a hunting scene he described. Bloom, who does not hunt, says "I've seen photos. I've seen photo essays of this." Bloom says he has no regrets. "I'm sorry people don't get it. I knew I was stepping into something, absolutely. But isn't that what journalists ought to be doing?"
