Jill Kelley emailed Tampa Mayor Bob Buckhorn twice this past week to complain about the media. Kelly wrote Tuesday “asking for help with ‘paparazzi.’ ” On Wednesday, she wrote of being “exploited by the media,” Richard Danielson, Mary Jane Park and Kameel Stanley report in Poynter’s paper. That same email read:
“I wouldn’t care — if they got the facts right and the focus was on the criminal that stalked all of us,” she added in an apparent reference to Petraeus biographer and mistress Paula Broadwell. “But the truth will one day prevail.”
Then she complained, “to put insult to injury, your police dept gave the local 911 tapes to the press!”
In those 911 calls, Kelley told Tampa police she was an “honorary consul general” and asked if they wanted to “get diplomatic protection involved” to remove members of the press from the vicinity of her house.
In Florida, as in many other jurisdictions, 911 calls as well as emails to public officials are public records. Florida, in fact, has a strong tradition of making public records easily available.
Buckhorn told the paper he didn’t act on her complaint.
“Public record,” he said of the police calls.
