The misery continues in Philadelphia, as there are whispers the Inquirer and Daily News may be facing layoffs today. Victor Fiorillo reports that “as many as 50 editorial layoffs are expected, which seems like a suspiciously high number, considering that it would gut the papers.” Philadelphia Media Network management is meeting with Newspaper Guild of Greater Philadelphia representatives at 4 p.m ET, guild executive director Bill Ross confirmed in an email. He said there are no further details at this time.
Poynter’s Rick Edmonds says layoffs before a sale are “relatively common”: “Basically, the idea is if there’s unfinished business to be done, the entity on the way out does some of that rather than sticking it to the new owners.”
